Watch our Q&A above and head below for more from The Jennifer Hudson Show…
That Grape Juice: Why was a talk show the next step you wanted to take in your career?
Jennifer Hudson: Everything I do is driven by my passion and love for what I do. And that’s how I got here. And I love to talk. If I don’t sing, I speak. And so, it’s like, okay, you can roll your camera, but I’m going to keep talking to people with or without. I like people. I love the energy they bring and give. I love, I love hearing people’s stories, and their passions. It’s one of my favorite things about what I do is being around people. And watch them do what they do and what excites them. And that inspires me, that’s where I draw my inspiration from. And then I had the chance to realize so many things. I want to give somebody else the stage, you know, and no matter how talented you are, or what you want to show your show for, if you want to party, if you want to escape, I want you to be able to come to my show so you can do it.
That Grape Juice: There have been so many talk shows over the years, how do you distinguish yours from others?
Jennifer Hudson: Usually I feel like all I can do is be me, you know, be Jennifer. And from my perspective, and I feel like that’s what will help make the difference. Because again, I want a more natural, organic feel. And I want to be able to implement all my other facets like the characters. Like, you don’t know who you’re gonna get. I may have a bob [hairstyle] one day, the next, like, what girl is she today? It depends on how I feel. It’s emotion-based, or if I’m playing, I’ve got a set, but once I walk into the room, your energy can send me somewhere else. So you can become a part of the show. You know I wanna hear from you, girl, why are you wearing that outfit? What did it take for you to get here? I want to hear from everyone, I want everyone to be part of the space. So to say what it’s gonna be, I need you in the room.
That Grape Juice: What other talk show hosts have inspired/influenced the way you will approach your own show?
Jennifer Hudson: You know, talk shows are just ingrained in us, you know, you can’t talk about anything and not be inspired by Oprah, you know what I mean? Or all the talk shows, everything, The View. it is so. I am a sponge. So, it’s just that it’s soaked in me. But at the same time, my job now, I oddly, is just to be myself. And I say it like that, because for 20 years I played Effie in Aretha, I sang on everybody’s songs. And it’s like, well, this time it’s my turn to just be… me. So even though I’m inspired by all the other talk shows, I just want to be Jennifer.
That Grape Juice: Who are your dream guests?
Jennifer Hudson: Oh, I’m a dreamer. So that’s a great answer here. I get to meet so many people and be inspired by so many things, it varies. And it’s continually changing, or it’s continually growing. Like, I’m inspired by talent. So, it’s like maybe it’s a kid that I see like, ‘Oh, why don’t you come and do that on my show.’ And I’m happy that I can have a platform to give them a platform. Because I like to give the spotlight to others. And so, I’m grateful to have a platform to do that. But when I think of celebrities, I think to myself, which one do you want me to ask? Do you want me to go to the cinema? Or do you want me to make music? Or, or, like, sports? As if I was in all these things. I love old school. I was sitting with Smokey Robinson doing Respect. And we were talking about Aretha but then he got into a fuss. I want to hear everything [from him]. But then I wanna sit with Megan [Thee Stallion]. I want to see your Cardi B. I want to see Drake. I feel like all of these things are pieces of me. Nicole Kidman. So it’s so wide. You know, and then I definitely want Simon Cowell because we have a lot to talk about. You know what I mean? Well, it goes on and on. And then I [will] listen to people and say “hey, who do you want me to talk to?” And I will answer it too.
That Grape Juice: How will audiences see another side of Jennifer Hudson through this new show?
Jennifer Hudson: Because you’ll see Jennifer, the person, not the actress, playing someone or the singer singing the song, but the person and that’s what excites me the most. [People will hopefully say] here is who Jennifer Hudson is and get to know the person. Like, I’m your girlfriend. Come sit on the sofa, come see me. And I’m glad I have a place you can come. You could come to my house too [laughs]. I love that I can finally just be me, Jennifer.
That Grape Juice: What are your main goals for The Jennifer Hudson Show?
Jennifer Hudson: I’ve always loved seeing people come together in one accord and in positivity. And I feel like that’s the time that you know is needed. We live in a time where everyone… ooh baby, there’s a lot going on in the world. And I want this to be a place where we can talk about these things. We are not going alone. It doesn’t happen without it in the middle of it by ourselves. Or if you feel like partying, if you feel like getting away from it all. If you want to relax, whatever. You can come to my show and feel comfortable enough to just be and that’s what I want to be this bridge to connect everything.
